Fighting Back Against Bullying!

As most people know, today is Anti-Bullying Day. However, what most people may not know is the history behind Anti-Bullying Day and how it originated.

The original event was organized back in 2007 by two twelfth-grade students named David Shepherd and Travis Price of Berwick, Nova Scotia, who bought and distributed 50 pink shirts after a ninth-grade student named Chuck McNeil was bullied for wearing a pink polo shirt during the first day of school. That year, Nova Scotia Premier Rodney MacDonald proclaimed the second Thursday of September (aligning with the start of each school year) as "Stand Up Against Bullying Day" in recognition of these events.

In 2008, then-Premier of British Columbia, Gordon Campbell proclaimed February 27th to be the provincial Anti-Bullying Day. Since this time, our entire Country now recognizes and acknowledges this day on the last Wednesday of February each year.

The original Anti-Bully Day was instituted to prevent further bullying.

However, 15 years later, I question how much things have changed. And I don't mean just in schools, but also at home and in the workplace.

Celebrating Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity

I feel incredibly grateful to live in an age and a country where people can identify (or choose not to identify) their sexuality and not be judged or shamed for their sexual orientation. Unfortunately, there will always be ignorant people who attempt to spread their hatred and fears to others. These closed-minded individuals usually lack the intelligence, common sense, and empathy toward those who choose to live a different life and follow a separate path from their own.

When it comes to someone's sexuality and how they choose to identify themselves, it quite honestly is none of my business. I could care less as to what goes on in the bedroom, bathroom stall, kitchen, back seat of the car, etc between two (or three or four) consensual adults. Whether someone is in a closed relationship or an open relationship is completely irrelevant to me. And even though it's not my place to pass judgment or offer an opinion, I do want to take today - Valentine's Day, to show my support and celebrate Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity.

How to Avoid Seriously Injuring Yourself in the Gym

I know what you're thinking - How can someone who has suffered from 3 serious concussions, 2 enemas, 1 grand mal seizure, emergency appendectomy surgery and multiple black eyes, offer advice on how to avoid injuring oneself? That's like someone who files for bankruptcy offering financial advice. However, even though I've had my fair share of health scares over the past few years, I can assure you that none of my health issues or injuries have occurred from exercising and/or working out. I have never seriously injured myself while performing any exercise in the gym or have had to stop or cut back on my training intensity for a few days/weeks due to a nagging injury.

After training intensely in the gym for 20+ years, I believe the reason I have been able to remain injury-free is that I follow a series of rules that I apply to every workout that I complete. Some of which, I'm going to share with you today.

Never Apologize for Not Being Normal

It was brought to my attention the other day that the same attributes and personality traits that I pride myself upon having in life are the very same attributes and personality traits that are deemed unusual and/or bizarre by society's standards. At first I was offended and a bit taken back as I felt that my character was being attacked. However, now that I've had a few days to reflect upon the comments that were directed toward me, I realize that the person who was suggesting my lifestyle was a bit odd was not trying to hurt my feelings. This person is a close friend who was simply providing me with an observation. An observation is that I do not live a normal life. And to be honest, that observation is 100% accurate. I do not live a normal life. And I'm incredibly fucking proud of it!
