I have to be honest.
The idea of working 9-5 bores me.
The thought of working for the weekend makes me feel depressed.
The term “Sunday Funday” gives me nausea.
And the belief that one must take a vacation each year in order to recharge and refresh their body and mind perplexes me.
Look, I’m not normal. I’m not programmed like most people. I don’t look forward to days off, because I don’t take days off. I love what I do for a living and allow my body to rest and recover when it asks me for it. I don’t want to be told when I can take a vacation and I don’t have any aspirations to designate one particular day each week to having “fun” just because I’m not scheduled to work on that one particular day.
The problem is that I have a sickening work ethic that does not allow me to stop until the goal that I set has been achieved. This laser focus mentality that allows me to block out all mental barriers that include fatigue, anxiety and fear of failure, has been a significant asset to me for the past 20+years in business. But it’s also proven to be somewhat detrimental to my health as I documented earlier this past year in my blogs with my appendectomy surgery back in August of 2020, and then my Grand Mal Seizure that I sustained earlier this year in March.
I’m happy to report that I have now slowed down on life since my most recent health scare. However even though I am allowing my body and mind more time to rest and recover from the everyday demands and stresses of life, I remain hungry for success. Actually, I’m not hungry. I’m starving……
What Does Success Look Like To You?
Becoming successful can mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people. Some people view success as having financial freedom to do as they please in life. Others view success has building a healthy and fit physique that they are confident and proud to walk around in. Having a family and being surrounded by loved ones can also bring a feeling of success, as it takes work, dedication and sacrifice to raise and support that family.
For myself personally, I view success as being independent and not having to rely on others in order to help me accomplish my goals and achieve my dreams. At the same time, being independent also means that I cannot blame others when I don’t accomplish those goals or achieve those dreams within the time period that I have allotted myself to do so.
Before a person becomes successful, I believe it’s crucial to figure out and define what success will look like to that person.
You Can’t Half Ass Being Successful
If you put in mediocre work, then you’re going to achieve mediocre results. You can’t be one foot in and one foot out if you truly desire to become successful in life. It really is all or nothing. When I first started training clients, I worked 7 days a week, at 16-18 hours each day, while balancing two jobs. My goal at that time was to one day be able to run my own business and work for myself. I knew that in order to achieve this though that sacrifices would have to be made. I lost a good relationship, I lost friendships and I lost time with family. Looking back now, I definitely have some regrets. However at the same time, if I had not dedicated all my time, effort and energy into building and growing my business, then I would not be in the position in which I am in today. And that positiion has provided me with the financial freedom to do what I want in life, while at the same time continue to have a rewarding career that allows me to help others improve their own quality of life through diet and exercise.
Final Thoughts
So are you hungry or are you starving for success? Trust me there is a difference between the two. A hungry person will still be able to go to sleep at the end of the day. A starving person won’t even think about sleep until he or she has done everything that they possibly can to ensure that they are one step closer to achieving their goals.
If you are starving for success, then you will fully commit yourself to the process in which it will take to get there. This means that you won’t always have a weekend. This means that you won’t always be able sleep in. This means that you won’t always be able to eat whatever you want, whenever you want to. This means that you will have to make sacrifices. This means that you will have to become self-motivated. This means that you will have to be determined to succeed.
“For me life is continuously being hungry. The meaning of life is not simply to exist, to survive, but to move ahead, to go up, to achieve, to conquer.”
