Let’s be honest, none of us are self motivated 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There are days where we don’t want to go to work, there are times when we want to skip the gym, and there are moments when we just want to say fuck the diet and eat whatever the hell we want! And in my opinion, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.
Sure, we might feel a bit guilty when we do the things that we’re “not suppose to do”, but at the end of the day, you only live once, so you might as well enjoy even the occasional shameful moments whenever you can.
Now I know that as a Personal Trainer / Online Coach, I’m suppose to be an overly enthusiastic, super positive and annoyingly energetic individual. I mean it does come with the title of this profession. However unlike many of my over caffeinated, selfie obsessed, and mind numbingly narcissistic counterparts, I’m far from the Happy-go-Lucky Meathead, that some people may portray me to be.
Training The Trainer
If a client cancels on me last minute or doesn’t show up for a session, I don’t go ranting and raving on social media about how lazy or weak-minded that client might be. There are other things that are more important in life then going to the gym. And regardless of how good or how lame the reason/excuse might be for cancelling or missing a workout, it’s not my place to pass judgement or criticize. My clients pay me to do a job. And that job is to help them achieve their health and fitness goals. I can’t help them if they don’t show up to the gym or don’t send me their weekly check-ins online. And because they are adults, they know that. Therefore rather then shame, ridicule or pass blame onto someone who is having difficulty staying consistent and committing to a workout schedule, I find it to be more productive to try and support and not give up on that individual even when they themselves want to give up. This in my mind is just one of the many factors in which separates a great trainer from a good trainer.
Always Accountable
Roughly 70% of my own clients have worked with me for over a decade. In an industry where most people hire a Personal Trainer to help them get started and teach them how to exercise and workout so that they can eventually go and do it on their own, this is unheard of. Now from an outsider’s perspective you could look at the reason for this in two different ways:
1) I’m a really bad trainer that hasn’t taught my clients how to train and exercise on their own, hence why they’ve been stuck with me for the past 10 years straight.
or
2) I’m a really good trainer that provides excellent customer service, reasonable rates, and a constant willingness to help my clients consistently set and achieve new goals.
Being the optimist that I am, I choose to believe/hope that’s it’s the latter of the two…
I take my clients goals seriously and I hold them accountable for achieving these goals. I don’t take sick days, I don’t go on vacations and I don’t take days off until the work has been done. I do my job and I do it well. This accountability to remain focused and determined on both my clients’ and my goals, has allowed me to excel in an industry that is highly competitive and can be cut throat at times. Yes, you could definitely say that consistency is key here.
Let’s Give Them Something To Talk About
Okay, so we all know that to be good at or to accomplish anything in life, we have to be consistent at what we are trying to achieve. And you can go watch all the motivational videos on YouTube that you like, or buy tickets to the next Tony Robbins Show, but if you don’t have that natural desire and willingness to want to succeed, then you probably won’t ever really succeed. And that’s okay. There are plenty of people that never succeed in life. Whether they lack that desire to be successful or are just okay with living a status quo life, not everyone wants to be the best at what they do and would rather just not try, then have to face failure all together.
But if you are one of the few of us that actually gives a shit and wants to take control of your life and doesn’t care how much or how often you fail, then just remember that you have to remain consistent with what you are trying to achieve. I haven’t achieved everything that I want to achieve in life just yet. However I have remained on course and have not allowed the temptations of short term gratifications lead me off my path to long term satisfaction.
Whether your goal is to have your own career before the age of 30. Or to be a millionaire before the age of 40. Or to have a family of your own before the age of 50. Or to be retired by the age of 60. Or to have the body of your dreams before the age of 70. Or to have no timeline and achieve anything and everything you wish to achieve whenever you wish to achieve it, regardless of how old or young you might be.
BE CONSISTENT AND GO ACHIEVE IT!!!!
Yours in Good Health,
