Pointless Posts, Halfwitted Hashtags & Trashy Tweets – Social Media, Shame on You!

As I was scrolling though my Facebook newsfeed the other day I came across a post from one of my Facebook “friends” that read that she was taking a break from Facebook. Now this isn’t the first time I’ve seen a post like this come through my newsfeed but whenever I see posts that read “taking a break from Facebook for a few days” I often wonder as to why the person feels the need to share with us that he or she is taking a break from social media. Do these people really think that we will wonder as to where they are if they have not posted a shameless selfie or ridiculous rant in a few days?

Even though I may not understand as to why people feel the need to share every little detail of their life on social media and then tell us that they are taking a break from social media, I do understand as to why they are taking the break……..

Social Media is Exhausting!!!!!

Social Media is Stressing Me Out!

As I mentioned in a previous blog a few weeks ago, I suck at Social Media. And to tell you the truth, I don’t really mind sucking at Social Media. Yes I understand that it’s the way of the future and sure I get that it’s a great way to generate more clientele to a business and market yourself on a more global scale, but it’s really not my specialty. It’s not that I don’t think it’s important or that it can be a useful networking and marketing tool for businesses, it’s just that I don’t think it’s as important as some people would suggest. Regardless, I continue to make sure that we as a company remain consistent and relevant with our social media platforms even if that means having to occasionally just regurgitate generic dribble that’s been posted thousands of times before.

Current Clientele vs Potential Clientele

Last week I took a small break from social media for 3 days. I didn’t make any special announcement nor did I go on a rampant rant as to why I was taking this break. And to tell you the truth, I don’t think anyone even noticed that I was off social media anyways. My reason for taking time off from Instagram and Facebook to help generate new potential clientele, was because I was incredibly busy working with our current clientele. And our clients will always take precedence over any additional marketing that we do outside of the gym. This is something that will never change. I am extremely grateful for having become so successful in this industry and I would be nowhere without the
continued and ongoing support from all of our loyal clients.

A Newsfeed Full of Narcissists

Is it just me or does it seem as if social media is becoming a stage for wannabe fitness models and a place where people can just rant and rave about how hard their lives are? I have to admit that as someone who has been heavily involved in the fitness industry for almost two decades, I’m starting to find myself discouraged each time I log onto my Facebook or scroll through my Instagram Newsfeed. There are only so many bathroom selfies I can handle, ass updates that I can stomach, and yes, there really is a limit to how many times a day a person can and should roll up their shirt, take a photo and do an “ab check”(FYI that limit should be 0!). A perky bum does not inspire me to squat deeper. A set of ripped abs does not motivate me to starve myself any further. And constantly hearing about your “fitness journey” does not inspire me to become a better person.

My Internal Struggle With Social Media

As much as I may dislike Social Media at times, there are just as many times that I do enjoy reading articles and viewing photos online that have been posted from my friends, clients and colleagues alike. I will always show my support and appreciate a blog or article that I know took time, effort and research to write. I like seeing photos of my friends and can respect the results that they have achieved with their physiques, as long as those results are displayed in good taste (as in with CLOTHES ACTUALLY ON!)

Searching for Original Content

As much as I may loathe the cheesy hashtags, idiotic abbreviations, and the ridiculous idiosyncrasies that have infested our social networking platforms, I must confess that I myself am actually part of the problem rather then part of the solution. Even though I may not be taking shirtless selfies and bragging about my astonishing accomplishments (which are really not that astonishing), I’m still out there hashtagging and blogging away with the rest of the self-entitled internet perpetrators of the world. Hence my self loathing.

Going Back to the Basics

Years back when I first started to exercise and workout, I did so with the sole purpose to look and feel better about myself. When I was able turn my healthy hobby into an actual career, I did so with the sole purpose to help others look and feel better about themselves. I don’t ever want to portray myself as an arrogant, cocky, egotistic know it all. I don’t want to be a famous Instagram star. I don’t care how many “likes” my photos receive on Facebook or how many followers I have on Twitter (hell, I don’t even have Twitter account!).

Perhaps, I’m thinking too small. Perhaps, I’m not seeing the bigger picture. Perhaps I’m not taking advantage and using Social Media to it’s fullest potential. Perhaps I will fail. Then again……..Perhaps I won’t.

Yours in Good Health,
