Should Fitness Be Fun?

I’ll be honest and direct – I can’t in good conscious label or describe any of our Group Classes and Training Sessions as “Fun”. The reason I can’t advertise our workouts as “Fun” is because it would be misleading to potential clients, a lie to myself, and complete false advertising.

Our workouts are not fun.

Our workouts are difficult.

Our workouts are challenging.

And Our workouts produce results.

Why Working Out Becomes Addictive

Ask anyone who has ever completed a tough workout and they themselves will usually tell you how good they feel afterwards (after the pain and nausea has subsided that is.) People who enjoy intense workouts enjoy them because they like to be challenged both physically and mentally. Once you complete a workout that has been demanding on the mind and taxing on the body, it’s almost impossible to go back to a workout that feels anything less. Exercising and working out is like anything in life. If it’s too easy, most of us will eventually grow tiresome and bored of the constant repetitiveness, and quickly lose interest due to a lack of results. And I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I have to tell you that easy workouts will NOT produce results. Our bodies are incredibly intelligent and resilient. They adapt quickly towards new surroundings and new routines. If you are not consistently challenging your muscles to grow and forcing your body fat to decrease, then your results will remain stagnant. And if your results remain stagnant, it’s very easy to lose motivation to continue to go to the gym and workout. I mean if we’re not building muscle, and if we’re not losing fat, and most importantly, if we’re not improving our health, what’s the incentive to even go to the gym and exercise?

Don’t Be So Critical

Now the reality is that not everyone enjoys exercising and working out. Actually statistically speaking, the majority of people continue to live fairly sedentary lifestyles. People still smoke daily. People still drink regularly. And people still make poor food choices hourly. People still drive when they could walk. People still sit when they could stand. And people still waste hours on technology when they could be spending hours on improving their health instead. Unfortunately most people will not change these habits. And in all honesty, we have no right to judge these people for the way they choose to live their own lives. As a Fitness Professional, it’s my job to educate and motivate others upon how they themselves can improve their own quality of life through diet and exercise. However if certain people don’t want my help, then I refrain from offering it to them. After all, there is nothing worse then receiving unsolicited advice.

With all that being said, I refuse to try to market our training services as “Fun” in order to get people who hate exercising into the gym. Again, not only is this misleading, but it’s a misrepresentation of the work and effort that is needed to not only change one’s physical health, but also change one’s mentality towards how they approach following a healthy nutritional plan and incorporating regular exercise into their weekly routine. Therefore, I ask my fellow competitors and fitness enthusiasts who describe their own workouts and training sessions as “Fun”, to please explain to me where and when this “Fun” happens. Because quite honestly, I’ve been doing this shit for over twenty years now, and not once has the word “Fun” entered my vocabulary during a workout

Fuck Fun Workouts?

Remember, there is a time and a place to have fun. And in my opinion that time and place is NOT in the gym. I’m not suggesting that we have to be 100% serious the entire time we are exercising. However I do believe that if we really do want to achieve results, then we have to be willing to put in our complete focus and concentration towards what we are trying to accomplish in the gym and with our bodies/health.

So if you’re reading this blog in hopes of finding a Personal Trainer/Coach who will offer you “Fun” workouts, I’m sorry to tell you that I am most certainly NOT the person you want to work with. On the other hand, if you are determined to reach your target training goals and want to see/feel results, than I can promise you that I will give you my 100% effort and undivided attention in order to help you succeed.
