I never thought I would see the day where I would be asking the question whether or not Christmas should be cancelled. However with COVID-19 cases continuing to rise across the Globe, and with our Doctors & Scientists strongly advising against traveling and/or attending/hosting large gatherings due to the spread of the coronaviruses, it’s actually a valid question to ask.
For myself personally, I’ve never really been one to celebrate the Holiday Season. The only thing I do differently on Christmas Day is take an actual day off from work! It’s the one and ONLY day each year where I don’t go into the gym to train clients. And not because I don’t want to, but more so because no one seems to want to exercise and workout on Christmas Day with me.
However for those of you who are normal and who do have a life, this is without a doubt going to be a challenging time of year for you all. And if you are someone who has kids, I can only imagine how difficult this particular Holiday Season is going to be for both yourself and your children. Tough decisions are going to have to be made. If you have parents who are older, are you going to take the risk and visit them? If you have family members who believe we are all overreacting to this Global Pandemic, are you going to take a stance against them and speak up? If you have friends who are not in your “Bubble” that want to meet for a few Holiday Drinks, will you give in to temptation?
My Confession
I have a confession to make. I haven’t been the perfect pandemic student these past 8 months. There have been times where I only washed my hands a few times each day rather than a few times each hour. There have been times where I did not wear my mask in situations where I really should have been wearing my mask. And there have been times in which I have visited with my parents who are both in their mid sixties when I’m well aware that this is something that I should not be doing given their ages and risk tolerance.
As you can see, even though I’ve tried my best to do my part in order to help flatten the COVID Curve, there have been times in which I have slipped up and honestly, just shit the bed.
I have no excuses. I have no valid reasons. And I have no “scientific facts” backed by the Anti-Maskers for not doing what I’ve been asked to do as a concerned and responsible citizen. I just have to do better. And moving forward, I will.
So Should We Cancel Christmas?
Well, I can’t really answer that question for you. I personally am making the decision to stay home this year and NOT attend any family dinners or social events with friends. I wouldn’t judge or shame you though if you decided to do the opposite. After all, who am I, or who is anyone for that matter to pass judgement or criticize on the way in which you decide to live your life?
My only recommendation is to just remember that people are dying from this virus. No, the numbers are not staggering (yet). And yes, I understand that statistically speaking, here in British Columbia, that more people are dying from drug overdoses each day than they are from COVID-19 (currently anyways). But neither of these facts should become reasons as to why we can justify being social and spending time with family and friends that are outside our bubbles just because it’s the Holiday Season. There will be plenty more Christmases to be had and enjoyed by all of us.
Perhaps this year, we can all just celebrate Christmas a little less, so that next year, more of us can all be around to celebrate it together.
Just my opinion anyways…….
